the most important meal of the day

As a comforting reminder that some things clearly never change, despite nearly everything else in life turning upside down, I still find myself on the hunt for the perfect breakfast food. Said food must be healthy, providing the sort of nutritional punch you need to get the day off on the right foot; portable, namely suitable for on-the-go munching; and delicious, preferably on the sweet side.

I’ve taken to searching the good ol’ RSS reader for inspiration because, obviously, there are some brilliant folks on the interwebs. I found this recipe via Meghann and it seemed to be perfect: chock full of vegetables (of all things), less sugar and fat than the usual muffin, and the list goes on.

peanut butter brownies and existential questions

Sometimes, one just needs to make brownies.

A very good example of such a time is when one has just moved 1,500 miles away from home, to a cold, strange city. And perhaps the snow one was hoping for when moving from the south has certainly not materialized, but a long string of cold, cloudy, smoggy days have taken its place. I’m just saying, sometimes a girl needs brownies.

going crackers

While setting up the new house, inexplicable bursts of domesticity have engulfed me. I can’t help it; I spent Friday night reading through a ridiculous amount of The Joy of Cooking. I’m not sure if it’s the comfort of unearthing things like curtains and cozy rugs or the fact that winter seems to be stretching on forever (I know, it’s still only January), but all I really want to do is bake and decorate.

I’ve had this recipe from the inimitable Smitten Kitchen mentally earmarked for a very long time, and even bought the necessary spelt flour quite some time ago. For some reason, after emptying eleventy-billion boxes, making crackers suddenly sounded like an awesome thing to do.

kleenex and boxes and blondies, oh my!

Why, hello friends! It’s been awhile! We made the aforesaid cross-country move, which turned out to be even more complicated than we’d imagined. Surprised? I’m guessing not. We’re young and naive.

And that head cold I mentioned? It put me out of commission for longer than I care to admit. Add that to cramming in last minute visits to friends and family, sending away all of our earthly belongings and not seeing them again for a week, two hellish days of driving and delays on pretty much every end, and it’s been a rough couple of weeks.
