ingredient spotlight: powdered milk

So…this might gross you out a little. I don’t know. That’s kind of the reaction I had when I first saw powdered milk. But then I realized — it’s genius.

I’m not a milk drinker, and never have been. Don’t worry, I eat cereal daily, but with yogurt. That’s just how I roll. I always hated buying milk just to use a half cup in a recipe, but I also hated skipping over recipes that required milk just so I wouldn’t have to buy it. It’s a vicious cycle!

And then I discovered the brilliance that is powdered milk. If you’re like me and only use milk sparingly for cooking or baking, this is kind of ideal. For about $6 you can buy a big box, empty it into an airtight container and store it in your pantry for a long time. When you need milk for a recipe, you can follow this handy chart and mix up exactly the amount you need. No fuss, no waste. I love it. Please don’t judge me for my powdered milk.

No judgment here. What a good idea!

That’s my smart girl. I wonder how the calories and fat compare?

I drink milk but I use powdered milk all the time in my recipes! I use it most of my bread. Powered milk is the same as skim milk in fat and actually 10 calories less than skim milk.

Patty – glad to know I’m not the only one! That is interesting about the fat/calorie count.
