About

Rather Be Baking is the product of a writer/amateur baker (Laura) and a web designer/developer (Ryan). We’re twentysomething newlyweds, so this is our baby for now (along with an energetic, oversized Jack Russell named Ruby).
We love sweets and a clever turn of phrase. And although there’s definitely no formal training here, we’re willing to bake just about anything once (and often twice).
You’ll find a mixture of homegrown, handed down, and jacked up recipes recreated here. We’re big fans of simplicity. You won’t find a lot of fancy or expensive ingredients referenced, partly mostly because we’re cheap and partly because we’re far away from anything other than mega-mart grocery shopping.
Laura’s the chief baker, photographer, and dishwasher, and Ryan’s the taste tester and in-house web nerd. We make a pretty good team.
We recently moved from our home in the South to beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah. This change has presented a number of challenges, one of the biggest being learning to bake at a significantly higher altitude. All recipes are written/posted for sea level, but you’ll now find High-Altitude Notes following each recipe as applicable. Good high-altitude baking resources are hard to come by, and I hope to lend a little insight if you’re somewhere in the sky! Please note that all such suggestions are based upon my own baking, which currently occurs at about 5,000 feet above sea level.
Feel free to drop back by. We’re pretty sure it’s going to be yummy.
