local spotlight: pastrygirl

There’s a cute little street in our neighborhood with an eclectic assortment of shops, restaurants, and other businesses. We frequently visit the coffee shop there and have often noticed a whimsical bakery called Pastrygirl (with a pink sign!), but always seemed to be there at odd hours when they were closed. I stopped by said coffee shop one afternoon last week and noticed that Pastrygirl was open, so obviously I had to go in.

I picked up a couple of super cute little cupcakes, but Pastrygirl also carries a nice variety of, well, pastries like shortbreads and eclairs, as well as custom cakes. They were all gorgeous, but alas, moderation.

local spotlight: great harvest bakery

Last weekend we paid a visit to one of my favorite local spots, Great Harvest Bakery. Although Great Harvest is a chain, each store is locally owned and operated, and bread selection is even tailored to the owner’s and neighborhood’s tastes, making it truly a local bakery and a joy to visit. Great Harvest has a location in the 9th & 9th district in Salt Lake City, an eclectic neighborhood perfect for local artisan bread.

On this visit I picked up a loaf of sourdough bread studded with kalamata olives, asiago cheese, and fresh thyme. Will you look at those olives? I am in cheesy olive heaven with this bread. It’s going quickly in my house!

local spotlight: volker’s bakery

Last weekend while taking care of all the random errands that just don’t happen during the week, we drove by an indoor farmer’s market that I’d seen a few times, but had never actually passed on a weekend when it’s open. I squealed a little and Ryan looked at me like I was crazy because he was on the phone. It happens.

As soon as he got off the phone I told him that we had to turn around. The idea of a farmer’s market in Utah in February is pretty thrilling, as it’s pretty much summer in the rest of the country before the real farmer’s market here gets going. There were only a few vendor inside, but a huge table of beautiful breads caught our eye immediately and we left with two loaves.
